Chemical labelling information and Safety Data Sheets
Understanding the CLP Labels:
What is CLP? (Classification Labelling Packaging)
The CLP regulations are the EC Regulation No 1272/2008 on Classification,Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures. The legislation was introduced throughout the EU as a system to classify and label chemicals based on the United Nations Globally Harmonised System or GHS.
CLP sets detailed criteria for the labelling elements: pictograms, signal words and standard statements for hazard, prevention, response, storage and disposal, for every hazard class and category. It also sets general packaging standards to ensure the safe supply of hazardous substances and mixtures.
Should I be relabelling older CHIP-classified chemicals in the store with the CLP?
YES, the current advice is to put stickers over the old label.
Check the classification and label on the bottle and compare it with what the current Hazcard indicates and add the appropriate CLP pictogram(s) and signal word. In many cases, the hazard classification of a chemical under both CLP and CHIP is very similar.
Full information is provided in the supplied SDS, but we recommend referring to the CLEAPSS Hazcards which offer specific information for school/college use and general guidance on use, storage, emergencies and disposal.
CLP and BREXIT
The UK has left the EU, and the transition period after Brexit comes to an end this year. The European Union (EU) CLP Regulation will be replaced in Great Britain by retained EU law – the GB CLP Regulation. We will give full details once we have more information.
Safe Storage of Chemicals
“It is essential that an up-to-date inventory is kept of all the hazardous chemicals and materials held in school and college stores. Keeping this up-to-date is an effective method of managing hazardous substances and will help reduce any health, safety, and security risk” (DfE Safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals Nov 2017).
Timstar recommends the Labexpert chemical stock control software.
Use-by or expiry date
Use-by or expiry date informs users that the stated assay (guarantee of purity) of the (unopened) reagent cannot be relied upon after the stated date.
Concentration expressions
M – molar concentration, molarity is the number of moles of solute (the material dissolved) per litre of solution mol dm-3 or simply M.
N - normality is a measure of concentration equal to the gram equivalent weight per litre of solution.
% - one part in a hundred
v/v – volume by volume, both chemicals in solution are liquids
w/v – weight by volume, solid chemical dissolved in a liquid
w/w – weight by weight, the weight of each chemical is used and not the volume.
Vols. - hydrogen peroxide is given in terms of the volume of oxygen it can produce (100 vol hydrogen peroxide can produce 100 cm3 of oxygen gas).

Regulations Table:
Common Name:
A common name is defined by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) as a name that unambiguously defines a chemical yet does not follow
the current systematic naming convention. An example of a common name is Acetaldehyde, which has the systematic name Ethanal. e.g. Acetaldehyde
Systematic or IUPAC Name:
The systematic name also called the IUPAC name is the preferred way to name a chemical because each systematic name identifies exactly one chemical. The systematic name is determined by guidelines set forth by the IUPAC. e.g. Ethanal
Acetaldehyde LR:
LR - LABORATORY REAGENT: This grade consists of Pure, Extra Pure, Purified, organic and inorganic chemicals having reliable accuracy in routine laboratory analysis.
AR - ANALYTICAL REAGENT: Reagents essential for analytical purpose and research work having high purity.
Assay:
Chemical purity - typically determined from the amount of impurities present. e.g. 98% min
Density: Mass per unit volume: density = mass/volume. e.g. 0.788g/ml
M.W: Molecular weight is the sum of the atomic weight values of the atoms in a molecule. e.g. 44.05
Hazard Statements:
Hazard Statements (H-Statements) are part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Hazard statements provide standardised wording to indicate the hazards of a product including, when appropriate, the degree of the hazard. e.g. H224, H351, H319, H335.
Precaution Statements:
Precaution Statements (P-Statements) are part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Precautionary statements provide standardised wording and/or pictograms to describe recommended measures that should be taken to minimise or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposures to a hazardous product, or improper storage, handling, or disposal of a hazardous product.
e.g. P233, P280, P261, P301+P310, P331
Signal Words:
CLP uses a signal word to highlight the danger level. The new signal word has two levels: Danger — those substances and mixtures with the most severe hazards;
Warning — those substances and mixtures with less serious hazards.
Pictograms:
Under CLP, the seven familiar orange squares with symbols have been replaced by nine new red-bordered diamond symbols. Six of these new symbols are very similar, but, as seen below, there are three new or changed ones to become familiar with.
Flash Point
The flashpoint of a chemical is the lowest temperature at which its vapours ignite if given an ignition source. A lower flash point indicates higher flammability.
